THE ARTISTS: Giambattista Tiepolo

Giambattista was born in Venice on March 5 from Domenico and Orsetta Marangon. He was christened on April 16 in the church of St. Peter of Castello.

1697

On March 10 his father Domenico died.

1710

About this time he entered Gregorio Lazzarini’s workshop.

1715

He started painting the upper-arches of the Venetian church of Ospedaletto.

1716

He showed the draft of The Pharaoh’s Submersion during St. Rocco feast (August 16).

1717

He was mentioned for the first time in the Fringe of the Venetian painters.
Lovisa published “The Great Theatre of Paintings and Perspectives of Venice” that contained four engravings derived from his drawings.

1719

On November 21 he married secretly Cecilia Guardi, sister of the painters Antonio and Francesco.

1720

He was commissioned the Virgin of Carmel, now in Brera.

1722

He was commissioned the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew for the church of St. Stae in Venice.

He took part to the competition for the decoration of the Chapel of St. Domenico in the church of Sts. John and Paul in Venice, won by Piazzetta.

1724

He painted the upper-arch with the Sacrifice of Isaac in the church of Ospedaletto, according to some modification designed by Domenico Rossi.

1726

He was in Udine, where he decorated the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament in the cathedral; he worked in the castle and started decorating the patriarchal Palace for Dionisio Dolfin.
Always for the Dolfins, in winter he began the ten Roman stories for the family palace in Venice.

1727

His son Giandomenico was born.

1730

He was in Milan (frescos in the Archinto and Casati palaces).

1732

Adoration of the Infant Jesus for St Zulian’s in Venice. He started working in the cathedral of Bergamo.

1734

He painted some frescos several rooms in villa Loschi in Vicenza; he delivered the altarpiece of Rovetta.

1735

Alvise Pisani succeeded to the doge Carlo Ruzzini. Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum was published with some engravings by Visentini taken from Canaletto’s. He singed and dated the Madonna of the Rosary, now in a private collection in New York.

1736

His son Lorenzo was born. He rejected the earl Tessin’s invitation to Stockholm to decorate the king of Sweden’s palace.

1737

In January he delivered the Martyrdom of St Agate to the cathedral of St Anthony in Padua. He went to Milan to paint three frescos in the cathedral of St Ambrose. Moreover he sent three altarpieces to Udine and painted the one, now lost, for the altar of Cornaros in St Salvador in Venice, in this city he started working at the frescos in the church of Jesuits, finished in 1739.

1739

He painted the Martyrdom of St Sebastian for the convent church of Diessen.

1740

He decorated with frescos the gallery vault of the Clerici palace in Milan. He sent to Camerino the altarpiece with the Apparition of the Virgin to St Philippe Neri.

1743

Portrait of Antonio Riccobono for the Academy of Concords in Rovigo. He painted the Apotheosis of Vettor Pisani in the Pisani Moretta palace in Venice and delivered the eight side paintings that had been commissioned to him in 1739 for the ceiling of the Big School of Carmines in the same city. He painted several canvases for the court of Dresden, commissioned by Francesco Algarotti. He began the frescos in villa Cordellina in Montecchio Maggiore.

1744

Between this year and the following one he carried out several frescos and canvas for the Barbarigo palace in Venice.

1745

In the church of the Sandaled in Venice, between April and November, he decorated the vault with frescos. It was destroyed in 1915, during the Great War. In September he delivered the altarpiece with the Martyrdom of St John to the cathedral of Bergamo.

1746

Rosalba Carriera, blind, stopped painting. Canaletto went to London. Longhi painted Visit to a lady, now at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Between this year and the following one he painted the frescos of the Labia palace in Venice.

1748

He decorated two ceilings in the Manin palace in Venice on the occasion of Ludovico’s wedding with Elisabetta Grimani. Alter-piece with the three Dominican Saints for the church of Jesuits.

1749

He sent to Ricardo Wall, the Spanish ambassador in London, the altarpiece with Saint James the Great. He delivered the central part of the ceiling of the Carmines’ Great School in Venice.

1750

Called by the prince-bishop Karl Philipp von Greiffenklau, he left for Würzburg on December 12 - with his two sons Giandomenico and Lorenzo. He would stay there until 1753, working on the Residence decoration.

1752

He finished the frescos of Kaisersaal in Würzburg and began the ones in the vault upon the staircase.

1753

On November 8 he left Würzburg to return to Venice.

1754

On May 8 he delivered the Apparition of the Virgin to Saint John Nepomuceno to the Venetian church of Saint Polo; in the same year the painted the frescos in the Church of Mercy.

1757

He realized the decoration of the Valmarana villa and of the Trento Valmarana palace in Vicenza. Once again in Venice, he worked in Ca' Rezzonico.

1759

On September 30 he delivered the altarpiece to the church of Saint Sylvester in Folzano and on December 24 the one for the Este cathedral. Between August and September he painted, together with Giandomenico, the frescos for the oratory of the Childhood in Udine.

1760

He worked for the tsarina Elisabeth Petrovna. He was commissioned the fresco for the big saloon of the Pisani villa in Stra, which he would decorate between this year and the following one. He worked in the Canossa palace in Verona.

1762

On June 4 he arrived in Madrid, accompanied by his sons Giandomenico and Lorenzo. He worked until 1764 at the decoration of three big lounges in the Royal Palace.


1764 The death of Madame de Pompadour

1767

Between this year and 1769 he painted the seven altarpieces for the church of Aranjuez.

1769

He got the commission to decorate the collegiate of Saint Ildefonso in La Granja.

1770

He died suddenly on March 27 - he was buried in the church of Saint Martin in Madrid, which was destroyed later.
