Papillon: the dog of Mme de Pompadour. FCI: Group Number 9 Companion Breed THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: France and Belgium HISTORY: It is a very old breed. Approximately in the 13th up to 15th centuries this little gentle dog had been kept mainly at royal courts. Some well-known painters such as for example Tizian or Rubens used to depiet these dogs in their paintings. Some historically famous personalities such as Maria de Medicis, Louis XIV, Madame de Pompadour, later also Maria Antoinette, who went with her beloved pet to prison. CHARACTER UND APPEARANCE (LOOKS): In the past only nobility could afford this dog but today everyone who has got enchanted by this breed and has come to a conclusion that this dog would suit them can have this dog. But can really anybody keep this dog? Certainly not. Papillon is suitable for people who will love it and who will bring up the dog thoroughly but not too strictly. It is a small dog in two weight categories from 1,5 kg to 2,5 kg and from 2,5 kg to 4,5 kg. He is very lively, playful, cunning, fun inventor (mischievous) and a comedian. The Papillons are very inteligent, they rank among the first ten breeds in the intelligence chapter. Their body is very well proportionally constituted, their hair is easily maintained because it has no undercoat.That is why it is also suitable for people who are light allergic. The most remarkable thing about Papillons are its beautiful erected ears richly haired owing to which it got its name. The whole impression-it looks very light, gentle but it is also physically strong. It can manage long walks and it is suitable for Agility and Obedience competitions. I often say "One Papillon-no Papillon". The dog feels very well when being in a pack of Papillons, where it has a lot of equal friends for its games and mischief. It is absolutely not agressive. Its friends need not be only papillons, it likes to make friends with other animals as well. If it lives only with its people, it becomes emotionally dependent on them. If it is alone at home, it usually sleeps all day long. But it is not good for it to be let alone for too long. If you spend a lot of time with your little dog and you love it deeply, it will become your best friend, which can read your wishis out of your eyes and it likes to obey you and fulfil your wishes. Such a co-operation we can watch at their wild games and at the exhibitions as well. A self-confident individual exhibits itself proudly and with a pleasure. It dislikes rough treatment and it might become bashful and distrustful. There is nothing nicer than when your little pet coils on your lap wherever you sit down and desires to play with you and wants you to caress it. It can be unbelievably tender to its human and dog friends as well. If you want to own only one Papillon you may be sure you will not find a better and more faithful friend.
