Voltaire works as secretary for the French Embassy.

Voltaire is imprisoned in the Bastille for eleven months.

His first success with his tragedy "Oedipe".


1721 Date of birth of Madame de Pompadour

He published the first edition of "La Henriade" an epic poem about the religion war and Henry IV.

1726

After a persecution by Rohan the knight, Voltaire was imprisoned in the Bastille and subsequently exiled in England.

1728

He returned to France.

1731

He published "L’histoire du Charles XII" (The history of Charles XII).

1732

The success of his tragedy "Zaire".

1734

He publishes "Le Lettres philosophiques" (The philosophical letters). Threatened to be arrested, Voltaire seeks refugee in Cirey by his friend Madame du Chatelet.

While in Cirey, he publishes "Les éléments de la philosophie de Newton" (The elements of Newton’s philosophy).

Voltaire visits Frederick II in Clèves.

With the coming of the Angerson brothers, his friends, Voltaire accomplishes a secret mission in Berlin.


1745 The arrival of Madame de Pompadour at the court

Louis XV wins in Fontenoy and Madame Pompadour arrives at court. Voltaire is named historian of the King.

1746

He is elected at the Académie Française (The French Academy).

1747

He has to face some difficulties at court. "Zadig".

1748

In Nancy he attends the court of Stanislaus, the father in law of the King.

1749

Madame du Châtelet dies.

1750

Voltaire is named Chamberlain of Frederick II and goes to Berlin.

1751

Voltaire publishes "La Siècle du Louis XV" (The century of Louis XV).

1752

The Abbey of Prades collaborates to write “The Encyclopaedia” and then takes refugee in Berlin.
In September during a lunch Voltaire projects a Philosophical Dictionary with the King.
In October-November he has some arguments with Maupertuis.

1753

Voltaire breaks up with Fredrick II.
The King prevents him from going back to Paris, so he stays in Alsace and subsequently goes to Geneva at the Délices.

1756

Voltaire publishes “L’Essai sur le moers” and “L’Esprit de nations” and collaborates to the Encyclopaedia. D’Alambert goes to the Délices. The Seven Year War begins.

1757

The defeat of the French army in Rossbach.
Due to the beginning of the persecution against the philosophers, the Encyclopaedia breaks Off.

1758

The Duke of Choiseul takes part in the Ministry.
Voltaire buys Ferney and Tourney in French territory on the Swiss borders.

1759

Voltaire publishes "Candide" as well as a few pamphlets against the enemies of the philosophers.

1763

Voltaire publishes "Le Traité sur la tolerance" (The treatise about tolerance).


1764 The death of Madame de Pompadour

A portable philosophical dictionary is published in Geneva.

1765

Voltaire publishes “Le Philosophe ignorant” (The ignorant philosopher) and an extended edition of the “Dictionnaire philosophique” (The Philosophical Dictionary).
The Ministry allows the publication of the last book of the Encyclopaedia.

1766

The knight La Barre is beheaded for impiety and a copy of the Philosophical Dictionary is is burnt on his body.

1767

The publication of "L'Ingénu".

1768

The publication of "La Princesse de Babylone".

1769

A new edition of the Philosophical Dictionary entitled "La Raison par alphabet".

1770

An extended edition of the Philosophical Dictionary.

1776

Voltaire publishes "La Bible enfin expliquée".

1778

Voltaire goes back to Paris: the apotheosis and the death.
