Dorothy Gish (1898-1968) Biography At 16 Natalie was enrolled in a college where she studied dramatics and language. She also took music and singing lessons with a noted Viennese teacher. When she left college in 1925, she continued her dramatic lessons privately, meanwhile applying for small parts in Berlin stage plays. It took some time, but eventually she landed a part in a musical version of Madame Pompadour directed by Eric Charell and seen in Berlin in 1926. Charell was to become famous later as director of the 1932 film Congress Dances which became a worldwide hit. During the run of Madame Pompadour, Natalie was seen by Max Reinhardt, who signed her for the lead in his play es Leight in der Luft (The Light in the Sky). Natalie who had by now changed her name to the more harmonious sounding Tala Birell, was a hit in the play. Despite this success in the Reinhardt play, no other stage parts were offered after it closed, so in 1928 she took a job as understudy to Marlene Dietrich in a revue at the Reinhardt-Buhnen theater in Berlin. Marlene Dietrich proved to be a picture of health, and Tala had to wait until the revue went on tour before inheriting the Dietrich part, since the latter had film commitments. |
