Jean-Joseph Mouret (1682 - 1738)

Born in Avignon (France) on1682;
died in Paris (Charenton?) (France) on 1738.

French composer. He moved to Paris around 1707 and became Surintendant de la musique at the court of Sceaux in 1708 or 1709. He directed the orchestra of the Paris Opéra (1714-18), became composer/director of the New Italian Theater (1717-37) and director of the Concert spirituel (1728-34). Stage works include Le mariage de Ragonde(Sceaux, 1714); Les fêtes ou Le triomphe de Thalie(Opéra, 1714); Pirithous(Opéra, 1723); Le temple de Gnide(Opéra, 1741). Mouret also composed motets, airs, and instrumental music.

Very spoiled by his contemporary public, he was one of the worst enemies of Rameau. The jealousy take him to madness and died in a mental hospital.
