KEN APTEKAR: In the Private Apartments of Mme de Pompadour

Ken Aptekar brings Versailles to Miami for his third solo exhibition at the
Bernice Steinbaum Gallery (11 January-8 February, 2003).

Inspired by the true story of Louis XV’s mistress who needed Art more than anything in the world, Aptekar offers a highly personal look at the cultivated, clever and ever-loving Madame de Pompadour. She was the most powerful woman of her time, more influential even than the Queen of France whose husband she loved for twenty years. Her role as a patron of the arts helped produce a golden age of French decorative and fine arts. Today the prodigious number of artworks she
commissioned fills museums the world over. Yet credit for her savvy artistic
choices has been buried under the style known as "Louis XV."
Aptekar is known for his use of art history combined with contemporary texts.
He paints adaptations of old paintings on wood panels, and bolts glass sheets
with engraved texts over them. His work has been seen in exhibitions
world-wide, and he is the recipient of numerous awards including two from the
National Endowment for the Arts in the US and the Rockefeller Foundation
Residency in Bellagio. Recent Solo exhibitions by Ken Aptekar include Ken
Aptekar: Painting Between the Lines, 1990-2000, organized by the Kemper
Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, and major commissioned exhibitions
at the Victoria and Albert Museum/Serpentine Gallery in London, the Memorial
Art Gallery in Rochester, New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in
Washington, DC. He lives and works in New York and Paris.
